How to Play Category Wordle

You are playing the Sports category. The rules are:

  • Objective: Guess the hidden 5-letter word in 6 tries.
  • Answers: The hidden word always comes from the Sports list. Your guesses can be any valid English word of the right length.
  • Feedback: After each guess, the color of the tiles will change to show how close your guess was to the word.
Green means the letter is in the word and in the correct spot.
Yellow means the letter is in the word but in the wrong spot.
Grey means the letter is not in the word at all.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are the words in Category Wordle real words?

Yes! But rather than any random dictionary word, the answers are strictly constrained to the theme you selected (e.g., Animals, Foods, etc.). This makes it a great trivia challenge!

What happens if I enter an invalid word?

If your word is too short or not a recognised English word, the row will shake and flash red. Try a different word. Don't worry, it won't count as one of your guesses!

Can I switch categories mid-game?

Yes, you can simply click the back button in your browser or use the navigation bar to return to the Category Wordle menu.

About the Sports word list

Sports answers tend to be long: most are six or seven letters. A large share end in -ING, which is why G is one of the most common letters in this list even though it is rare in everyday English.

The sports list has 47 possible answers. Each round picks one at random, so the word length changes from game to game:

  • 4 letters: 5 words
  • 5 letters: 6 words
  • 6 letters: 15 words
  • 7 letters: 18 words
  • 8 letters: 3 words

Most useful letters

These letters appear in the most sports answers. Including several of them in your first guess gives you the most information:

  • I: in 25 of 47 words (53%)
  • N: in 22 of 47 words (47%)
  • G: in 22 of 47 words (47%)
  • S: in 19 of 47 words (40%)

Strong opening guesses

Your guesses can be any English word of the right length, but answers always come from this list. These words share the most letters with the other answers of the same length:

  • 6-letter grid: RACING (out of 15 possible answers)
  • 7-letter grid: CURLING (out of 18 possible answers)
