How to Play Cryptograms on Smotix
A cryptogram is a quote written in a secret code. Each letter has been replaced by another letter, and your job is to work out the original quote.
Smotix has a daily cryptogram that is the same for every player, and unlimited practice puzzles at four difficulty levels.
The rules
Every letter in the quote is replaced by one cipher letter, and the same replacement is used everywhere that letter appears. No letter stands for itself. Spaces, commas, periods, quotation marks, and apostrophes are not changed, so they show you where words begin and end.
- Type a letter to tell the game what you think a cipher letter stands for.
- Correct guesses turn green. Wrong guesses turn red.
- You get one hint per puzzle, and it reveals a single letter.
Where to start
Single-letter words such as A and I are good starting points. Look for repeated letters: in English, double letters such as LL, EE, SS, OO, TT, and FF are common.
Common endings such as -ING, -ED, -TION, -LY, and -EST can unlock several letters at once. Try the most frequent cipher letters as the vowels E, A, and O first.
Losing a puzzle
Three wrong guesses on the same cipher letter end the puzzle as a loss, and the solution is shown.
Daily and practice puzzles
The daily cryptogram is the same for everyone and resets at midnight UTC. Practice puzzles are available at easy, medium, hard, and expert levels, and you can play as many as you like.
