What is a Cryptogram?
A Cryptogram is a word puzzle featuring a short piece of encrypted text. Every letter in the original quote or statement is systematically replaced with a different cipher letter. Your goal is to substitute the original letters back into place to read the hidden message.
How does the Daily Cryptogram work?
Every day at midnight UTC, a new official Daily Cryptogram is selected using a date seed. Everyone on Smotix gets the exact same puzzle to solve, allowing players to compare completion times, build daily streaks, and compete globally.
Is the solution quote hidden securely?
Yes! Smotix strictly enforces a Zero-Exposure Security Policy. Answers and cipher keys are encrypted using server-side AES-256 tokens. Plaintext solutions are never sent to your browser console or network requests until you complete the puzzle or press Solve.
Are there unlimited practice cryptograms?
Yes, you can play infinite practice cryptograms across 4 difficulty levels (Easy, Medium, Hard, Expert) or filter by any of our 10 curated categories (Science, Space, Movies, Books, History, Tech, Sports, Animals, Geography, Famous Quotes).
Can a letter map to itself in a Cryptogram?
No. Our puzzle engine strictly enforces derangement: no letter will ever map to itself in the encrypted cipher code.
What happens when I use a Hint?
When you request a hint, our server-side API inspects your current mapping and reveals the correct plain letter substitution for one cipher character.
