How to Play Cryptograms

Master the art of deciphering letter substitution ciphers with these proven strategies and rules.

The Fundamental Rules

One-to-One Substitution: Every letter in the original quote is consistently replaced by a single cipher letter across the entire puzzle.
Derangement Guarantee: No letter ever maps to itself in the encrypted cipher code.
Punctuation & Spaces: Spaces, commas, periods, quotation marks, and apostrophes remain unencrypted as structural clues.

Select a cipher letter tile to highlight every instance of that encrypted character in the quote.

Look for single-letter words: In English quotes, single-letter words are almost exclusively 'A' or 'I'.

Spot short 2-3 letter words: Common words like 'THE', 'AND', 'OF', 'IN', 'TO', 'IS', 'IT', 'YOU' reveal key consonants and vowels.

Identify contraction apostrophes: Words like 'DON'T', 'CAN'T', 'IT'S', 'I'M' immediately reveal 'T', 'S', and 'M'.

Use letter frequencies: English letters like 'E', 'T', 'A', 'O', 'I', 'N' appear most frequently.

Press 'Check' to validate your mapping or 'Hint' if you need a letter revealed!

Look for repeated adjacent letters. In English, common double letters are 'LL', 'EE', 'SS', 'OO', 'TT', and 'FF'.

Three-letter word endings like '-ING', '-ED', '-TION', '-LY', and '-EST' can quickly solve multiple characters.
